Johnston’s award-winning Apprenticeships Schemes launch careers in Engineering

Johnston Sweepers operates an award-winning Apprenticeships at its manufacturing facility in Dorking, encouraging school leavers to take up careers in engineering as an option to university. The scheme aims to develop young people’s interest in ‘making things and promote engineering as an exciting and dynamic profession.

Each year we take on a new group of school leavers, training and supporting them in all aspects of engineering through to their BTECH and NVQ qualifications in Welding, Fabrication, Mechanical Engineering and Purchasing and Logistics.

At any one time we have around 20 Apprenticeships with young people at various stages of their three or four year training, our intake being around eight a year.

Johnston employs a dedicated Apprenticeship Scheme Coordinator to mentor, support and monitor our Apprentices through their training, liaising with the colleges and administering the scheme.  The Coordinator also identifies further career development potential among our class of Apprentices and many go on to supervisory and management roles within the company.

Each year a special ceremony is held for our latest class of Apprentices completing their training.  External qualification certificates are presented by Johnston’s Managing Director and the senior management team, followed by a reception to congratulate our Apprentices on achieving their qualifications.

In addition, we sponsor a BEng Mechanical Engineering undergraduate each year, offering a fully-paid and unconditional final year placement as part of their degree.  Many have returned to join Johnston full-time after graduating, and we go on to support them through further studies if they wish, including Masters degrees.
For school leavers who do not meet our Apprenticeship Scheme entry criteria of GCSE Grade C in English, Maths, Science and IT, we also take on Trainees and fund and support them through their NVQ qualifications.

In 2015 our training programme was named Apprenticeship Scheme of the Year in the Toast of Surrey Business Awards.  Over the years Johnston Sweepers has trained and mentored many hundreds of young people, nurturing and encouraging local new engineering talent, so we were delighted to win the award and be recognised for the commitment we have made in this area.

Over my time here I have been able to work in many different roles and positions which has given me a vast range of experience in all areas of engineering and allowed me to become a versatile and useful employee. Throughout my apprenticeship I have studied at college one day a week and after the third year I applied and was fortunate enough to be given the funding to take my education further than the standard apprenticeship and undergo a Higher National Diploma level 5, which I am currently working towards. Sweepers are a great product to learn engineering on because there’s a wide range of interesting disciplines to experience and the company has been very supportive in allowing me to develop my particular interest in design engineering, and to put into practice the knowledge and skill I have learnt over my time here.”

To Apply

To apply you must have a strong interest in engineering, be computer literate and have good communication skills, with the ability to work in a team.  You will need GCSEs (or equivalent) grade A-C including Maths, English and Science.

Training will take place Central Sussex College in Crawley, plus on the job training at Johnston’s facility in Dorking, Surrey.
